About Age Calculation

This calculator uses the international age system, where you start at age 0 on the day you are born and gain one year on each birthday. This is the standard used in virtually all countries around the world for legal, medical, and administrative purposes.

Age Calculation Formula

  • If birthday has passed this year: Age = Current year - Birth year
  • If birthday has not passed: Age = Current year - Birth year - 1
  • Total days alive: Exact count from birth date to today (including leap days)
  • Days until next birthday: Next birthday date - Today

Age Systems Around the World

Most countries use the international system where you start at age 0 and add 1 on each birthday. Historically, South Korea used a unique system where you are 1 at birth and gain a year every January 1 (making you 1-2 years "older"). South Korea officially switched to the international system in June 2023. Some cultures in East Asia also use a lunar calendar age for traditional and ceremonial purposes.

Practical Tips

  • For passport and visa applications, always use your international age (starting from 0).
  • Health insurance coverage changes at certain ages (26 for parent's plan, 65 for Medicare) -- plan ahead.
  • Social Security benefits increase by about 8% for each year you delay claiming between ages 62 and 70.
  • Many age-based discounts begin at 55 or 60 (AARP, senior discounts, travel deals).
