Tipping Guide
Tipping is customary in the United States and is a major part of service workers' income. The federal tipped minimum wage is just $2.13 per hour (though some states set it higher), so tips often make up the majority of a server's earnings. The standard tip at a restaurant is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill, with 20-25% for excellent service.
Tip Calculation Formula
- Tip Amount = Bill Subtotal x Tip Percentage
- Total = Bill Subtotal + Tip Amount
- Per Person = Total / Number of People
For example, a $85 dinner with a 20% tip: $85 x 0.20 = $17.00 tip, total $102.00. Split 4 ways: $25.50 per person.

Quick Mental Math for Tips
To calculate 15%: find 10% (move the decimal point left), then add half of that. For 20%: find 10% and double it. For 18%: find 20% and subtract a small amount. For example, on a $64 bill: 10% = $6.40, so 15% = $6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60, and 20% = $6.40 x 2 = $12.80.
Bill Splitting Etiquette
When splitting a bill, it is courteous to round up rather than down. If someone ordered significantly more or less, consider adjusting shares proportionally rather than splitting evenly. For large groups, many restaurants automatically add an 18-20% gratuity. Always check the bill for auto-gratuity before adding an additional tip to avoid double-tipping.
