How the Final Grade Calculator Works

This calculator uses the weighted average formula to determine what score you need on your final exam to achieve your target course grade. It accounts for the weight of the final relative to the rest of your coursework and gives you a clear, actionable number to aim for.

Formula Explained

Your overall course grade = (Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) + (Final Exam Grade x Final Weight). Solving for the final exam grade: Grade Needed = (Desired Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight. The final weight should be entered as a decimal (e.g., 30% = 0.30).

Worked Example

Suppose your current grade is 82%, the final exam is worth 25% of your course grade, and you want to finish with a B (83%). Grade Needed = (83 - 82 x 0.75) / 0.25 = (83 - 61.5) / 0.25 = 86%. You need at least an 86% on your final exam to achieve an overall B in the course.

Study Tips for Final Exams

  • Start studying at least 1-2 weeks before the exam, not the night before
  • Review past exams and quizzes β€” professors often reuse question formats
  • Focus on the topics with the heaviest exam coverage as outlined in the syllabus
  • Use active recall and spaced repetition rather than passive rereading
  • Form study groups to fill knowledge gaps and test understanding
  • Get enough sleep before the exam β€” sleep deprivation impairs memory consolidation

Important Notes

Grade scales can vary between institutions and even between professors. Some courses use plus/minus grading while others do not. Always check your syllabus for the specific grading policy. If your required final exam score seems unreachable, talk to your professor early about extra credit, grade curves, or other options.
